Angela Rodel will converse with James about the state of poetry translation
in the English-speaking world, what defines a “successful” translation,
and how to pitch poetry
to international magazines.

is a professional literary translator living and working in Bulgaria. She has translated Georgi Gospodinov’s Time Shelter (2021), Milen Ruskov’s novel Thrown into Nature (2011), Zachary Karabashliev’s 18% Gray (2013) and Angel Igov’s A Short Tale of Shame (2013) and Georgi Tenev’s Party Headquarters (2015), Virginia Zaharieva’s novel Nine Rabbits (2012), and many others. In 2014, she was awarded Bulgarian citizenship for her translation work and contribution to Bulgarian culture and her translations have received multiple awards including the National Book Center’s 2015 Peroto Prize, the 2016 AATSEEL Prize for Best Book of Literary Translation, as well as NEA and PEN Center grants. She is currently the Executive Director of the Bulgarian-American Fulbright Commission.
is a poet and translator. As editor of Interpret, Scotland’s magazine of international literature, he has published authors in more than twenty languages. James’ own poetry appears in some of the UK’s major literary magazines, including Stand, The North, New Welsh Review, Poetry Scotland, and Acumen. He was commended in the 2021 McLellan Poetry Competition, among Scotland’s most prestigious poetry awards, and is preparing his first chapbook for publication in 2023. James originally qualified as a conference interpreter, working with French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese. James was born in Manchester in 1993 and works in Edinburgh.
