Bio note

Hanna Karpinska was born and lives in Warsaw. She graduated in Slavic philology at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow with a major in Bulgarian Language and Literature and Journalism at the University of Warsaw. She has been teaching Bulgarian at the Bulgarian Cultural Center, working as an editor and as a documentarian at the Institute of Slavic Studies at the Polish Academy of Science.

Hanna Karpinska is currently a freelance translator. She has been tempted by the art of translation since her student years. She has been translating Bulgarian literature for over 30 years, focusing on fiction and drama. Her translation interests are primarily focused on contemporary literature.

Hanna has been working on anthologies, articles, reviews. A large part of her translated plays have been staged on the Polish theater stage. The subject of her work is Bulgarian literature, Bulgarian-Polish literary relations and translation. She cooperates with the magazines 'Dialog', 'Fraza' and 'Odra'. Since 1991, she has had her column 'Przegląd Zagraniczny' - 'Foreign Review', where she regularly publishes reviews of the Bulgarian literary press.

Residency goals

During her creative residency in Sofia, Hanna Karpinska will search for new interesting books, as well as collect materials for the magazine 'Twórczość'. Among her wishes is to become better acquainted with the work of the writer Yordanka Beleva. 

The residency is supported by the project Archipelagos, co-funded by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union and by the National Culture Fund, Bulgaria.
