Alina Nelega (Romania)

Bio note

Alina Nelega writes novels and theater plays. Her works have been translated, performed, published and awarded locally and internationally. She is a two-time winner of the 'UNITER' theater award for the plays: www.nonstop.ro and In the traffic jam and has received the 'European author' award of the Heidelberg Theater Festival for the play Amalia breathes deeply. She is a guest lecturer at the Writing Program of the University of Iowa, USA, and a continuous participant in national and international theater festivals with her performances and creative workshops.

Alina Nelega served as the artistic director of the National Theater in Targu Mures (2012-2017). She is a lecturer and head of the dramaturgy Master's program at the Faculty of Arts in the Romanian-speaking part of the University of Targu Mures.

She made her literary debut in 2001 with the experimental novel thel@stwitch. Her second novel As if nothing happened (2019) was awarded the prize for prose of the magazine 'Observator Cultural' and later translated into French. The novel Camel Shaped Cloud (2021) received the 'Sofia Nadezhda' Award for Women's Literature, the Radio Romania Cultural Fiction Award and the Students' Favorite Book of the Year Award at the the International Literary Festival in the city of Iași, Romania. In August 2023 the novel will be published in Bulgaria by the ICU publishing house translated into Bulgarian from Romanian by Lora Nenkovska.

Residency goals

Alina is visiting Sofia at the invitation of ICU publishing house to present her novel "Camel Shaped Cloud" (ICU, 2023) together with the translator Lora Nenkovska. The event starts at 7 p.m. on September 6 at the House.

The creative residency of Alina Nelega is carried out in partnership with the ICU publishing house.
