Thousands of Little Feathers: A workshop on translating Bulgarian poetry into English
11.06.2021 17:00 - 19:00

Thousands of Little Feathers
A workshop on translating Bulgarian poetry into English

with Eireene Nealand

When: June 11 2021, from 17:00 till 19:00

Where: The garden of the Sofia Literature and Translation House, 12 Latinka str. Sofia

In this peer-to-peer workshop for poetry translated into English we will move beyond literal translation, playing with the finer aspects of poetry, considering how elements like line breaks, punctuation and sound make a poem sing.

After an initial ice-breaker exercise, participants will have a chance to workshop their translations, and receive feedback from the group.  All levels are welcome. Everyone should be prepared to experiment and stretch boundaries, focusing on the process as much as the final result.

The workshop will be held in English for a group of up to 10-12 people. For registered participants only!

How to register: To register, please, send an email with your details and a sample of your poetry translation into English (a poem or few lines ) by June 10 (Thursday) to Veronika Petrova, project coordinator.

Eireene Nealand is a prominent poet and translator from California. Her stories, poems, and translations from Bulgarian, French and Russian have appeared in ZYZZYVA, The Chicago Quarterly, Drunken Boat, Poetry International, Index on Censorship, Catamaran, WHR, and The St. Petersburg Review, among others. She is in Bulgaria now as a Fulbright fellow on a residential stay at the Sofia Literature and Translation House during which she will be working on the translation of two young female authors Bistra Velichkova and Blagovesta Pugyova to translate their award-winning books from Bulgarian to English.
