East Translates East 2005 - promotion grants

Promotion grants, provided by Next Page foundation, support promotion initiatives of Central and East European publications as high quality translations are often published but remain unnoticed by their potential reading audience. The following projects were supported in 2005:

-  Promotion of 11 books from the Balkan Library series of Balkani Publishing House at Bulgarian universities in the cities of Sofia, Plovdiv, Veliko Turnovo, Burgas, Blagoevgrad

Aim: To provoke permanent interest in Balkan literature among students, stimulating intercultural tolerance and overcoming traditional prejudices in the understanding of the others in the region.

Action: Presentations of new poetry, prose and essays from Albania, Romania, Serbia and Montenegro, Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia, Croatia by prof. S. Igov, ass.prof. R.Stancheva and the publisher G.Grozdev in the major students’ centers in Bulgaria.

-  Promotion of the Serbian edition of the book White Raven by Andrzej Stasiuk

Aim: To promote interest in new voices in the Central and East European literature among the readership in Serbia and Montenegro.

Action: Presentation of the novel by the author Andrzej Stasiuk, Monika Sznajderman, literary critics in Belgrade, Budva, Podgorica

-  Promotion tours of six Polish and Ukrainian authors in the towns of Lviv, Kyiv and Dnipropetrovsk

Aim: To promote the interest of the Ukrainian readership in the masterpieces of contemporary Polish literature

Action: Promotion tours of Polish authors, accompanied by Ukrainian authors, whose books have already been published in Ukraine. Meetings held with readers and journalists at students’ campuses, universities, book stores, galleries, literary cafes. Within the promotion campaign are made recording of audio books with the voices of these authors (M. Nahacz, O. Tokarczuk, J.J.Fafara, L.Deresh, T.Prokhasko, V.Kozhelianko) and other celebrities, containing fragments of the promoted works and other Polish and Ukrainian masterpieces.
